Chicken Coop Construction in Progress

Just started working on my chicken coop today.  Shown in the picture are the front and back walls of what I would call the summer coup.  My plan is for this to have a wooden floor, some rods or limbs for climbing and perching, and to be open with wire mesh on all sides.  I am also trying to use as many already on-hand materials as possible to cut down on costs.

Total Costs (so far):
  • Untreated 2x4x12:  8 @ $3.50 = $28.00
  • Galvanized Wood Screws:  Left over from a decking project (various lengths)
  • Total (so far) = $28.00
Bring on the chickens!!!

  1. Scrap is good and the chickens won't care a bit. Going deep litter or some other method?

We just have a small tractor with an open bottom and move it every few days. The birds free range for an hour or so each day before dusk. That way they just walk back into the coop when the sun goes down.

  2. I haven't decided yet on the material for the bottom. I have been hearing good things about sand, but still researching a bit. I thought about the tractor, but I have a small back yard so not a lot of room to move around and I am a bit concerned about predators getting inside. We have some skunks lurking around as well as a racoon, I think. With the open bottom, I think the chickens might get eaten.
